small gods and playgrounds

When was the last time you played?

Me? Well, tonight.

And the white sangria (tastes like pineapple juice. Exactly. Dangerous, that.) had nothing to do with it.

After a delightful meal, my dear Gwendolyn1 [livejournal.com profile] sykii and I were enjoying a post-prandial stroll through Inwood Hill Park, and discovered that the Indian Road Playground stays open till 1 am.

At first, it was just memory lane, you know? What we would have imagined stuff to be (war stations, living chessboards, hallowed hallways through which to make stately evil imperial marches.

But then... there were swings, people. Swings. I love swings. Closest thing to flying I've found ever. And I slid down the corkscrew slide, and [livejournal.com profile] sykii can still hang upside down by her knees. We can't really be grown up, can we? If we can still do that?

Seriously, it was kaleidoscopically fun.

I can't wait to go back.

1 Obligatory Importance of Being Earnest Reference, pay it no mind.

(P.S. Gratuituous Icon Postage. ARE THEY NOT ADORABLE? I think I ship it.)

There's a swing in my local playground, and it has just the right length of chain, and it's on a slope, and it doesn't squeak or grind. when you go all the way up, it's like you're flying, and there's rolling grass in front of you and oh, it's the best swing ever. I call it swingvana. There are better parks, but I take my kid there and drag her over to the swings, all like "MOMMY NEEDS SWINGVANA."

SWINGS ARE THE BEST THING EVER.

I agree, swings are awesome. I still play on the swings when I'm at a playground.

Going high, then leaning back with your legs outstretched. oh yeah. I'm so there.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think I have swing envy.

I would feel weird in daylight hours because I feel like I'd be taking a turn from a kid. Just wait till I spawn, man. I can't wait to go into the ballpits again (you know, where they're all like, no adults except accompanying child.) CANNOT WAIT.

Even tonight there were these dudes walking by the deserted playground all like, er, what are those 30 year old women doing on those swings, and we were just like, "WHATEVER BITCHES. YOU WISH YOU WERE ON THESE SWINGS.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. And with your head pointed skyward, it's like you're floating in midair.

[identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Haaahahah WHEN YOU HAVE A KID,THEY ARE YOUR FREE PASS.

When other "grown ups" look funnily at me on the swings, I just feel badly for them.

Oh, man. I need to find some swings around here.

I played today, too! I climbed a tree.

When I saw the entry subject I was totally hoping you'd like, found a tortoise or something. ^_^

Great minds!

1. Swings are awesome. In kindergarten I used to scare the hell out of the teachers with my habit of launching myself from the swing at the top of the arc.

2. Adorable icon is adorable!

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so glad you icon'ed that -- I love that whole piece of art SO MUCH.

Swings are indeed awesome. I haven't been on one in ages. They're getting harder to find around here, oddly enough.

Also, icon love!! I adore the whole piece, but that bit is made of win!

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
They are super awesome. Also, um, can be quite a workout. They should make them exercise things. I would go all the time.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That would have been awesome. (I love that book.)

Yay tree climbing. I was never good at that.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
YES!

1. You're a flier! I was always a bit scared. My friend [livejournal.com profile] sykii told me about doing that wearing rollerblades. I am a chicken, what can I say?

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The other part is, I can now imagine them together in the Great Afterwards. Is it wrong that I find this comforting?

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's ADORABLE.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the way they nuzzle. *DED OF CUTE*

This was the first swinging for me in aeons too.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if Jack finds it comforting.

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
He'd find it a little weird and probably laugh if the thought was suggested to him. Since Ianto always was a little odd... hey, works out!

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'll stick it in the random dream/haunted by Ianto piece that I showed you the first part of.

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
YES!

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
YES! also, are you reading [livejournal.com profile] alex51324 Servant-Hearted universe? It's like a light fluffy version of what [livejournal.com profile] spiderine explored. Good times.

[identity profile] framefolly.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE playgrounds! And being as short as I am, I don't look TOO out of place in them...so I can't resist swinging, either :) .

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't, but I will.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you see the Jack/Regency thing I posted to TWH?

[identity profile] rm.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but I need more brain than I've had since then to read it and get into the language of it (it's quite clearly well done). I can't believe you posted that and didn't email me the second you read it.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant to, and then I forgot! Bad kali, no biscuit.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
They are truly awesome. [livejournal.com profile] sykii and I were talking about how they should make ones for older "kids" (like us).

[identity profile] laughingacademy.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Rollerblades? Damn. That must be the advanced class.

If I ever wrote out my bucket list, I suspect many of the items would involve freefall.

[identity profile] sykii.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you like crazy. You keep me honest. And young.

[identity profile] sykii.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Advanced or remedial. I was a pretty dumb kid ;)

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2009-08-13 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Same goes for you, dear one. ♥ ♥ ♥
