fandom secrets

Secret #184 from [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets today was something I think I always suspected about fandom at large. It still made me want to cry.

What was worse was how many people replied in agreement. But I think that's really about how anime/manga fans are as much fans of Japan itself as they are of whatever they're reading, and so are all crazy with the authenticity thing.

That said, someone who identified as a dwarf replied that therefore no one of standard height should cosplay as a hobbit, which I thought was a good counterpoint.

I dunno, there are so many ugly cosplay secrets that I just stay away from the whole thing, but as I said in my reply, people wonder why I hate Halloween and costume parties.

Yeah, the agreements really got on my nerves too, though I never make it through all the pages of comments.

The whole authenticity thing is so alarming. Like, it's all in our heads anyway!

The thing I hate about Halloween is that no matter what I do, no one ever recognizes me, unless it's a costume that hides my face. Like, the first thing people always notice is color. Every year, it drives me bugshit.

I've heard variations on that so many times. IMO, cosplay is for the fun and joy of those who do it, not the satisfaction of spectators.

fandom secrets... it seems like about 90% of it is "my friends would hate me if they knew I like/ship/don't like..." But I hate to think I'd miss something really cool if I skipped it.

I know! I love [livejournal.com profile] fandomscrets when it is celebratory, but it's like such a small amount of it lately.

I always want to be like, what kind of "friends" do you have anyway?

[identity profile] darthhellokitty.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Fifteen year old friends, I figure. :-P

I think it comes out of an understanding of character that's different than yours or mine -- I mean the actors playing a given character aren't the characters either, which isn't the distinction most people make. [livejournal.com profile] redstapler gets this -- at the Player's Club thing she kept going "Oh god, it's not just that you're doing Jack. You're doing John Barrowman's bodylanguage and it's killing me."

Also, when peopel get bitchy about this shit with book characters? YOU CaN"T EVEN SEE THEM.

[identity profile] kalichan.livejournal.com 2008-08-18 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and, while you know I want a chameleon-esque body/face more than almost anything, it is so more in the attitude than anything else.

But still, I hate it. It feels like being slapped.

Fuck that noise.

This is why I'm glad they made Kingpin black in Daredevil as well as Nick Fury for Iron Man and SHIELD.

If you don't love a character enough to see the costume more than the skin color of the person wearing it, you're DOING FANDOM WRONG!! Like when a slut dresses up as a black cat for Halloween, no one is like, "Hey, what are you? Because your face and legs are white and you're wearing a black tail, what gives?"

Bitches, man. Of course, I am the master of guessing obscure Halloween costumes. I've made so many people happy by yelling out "OH! You're _____! Cool!"

Okay, this is one of the million, billion reasons why I adore you beyond the telling of it. I think I laughed up a lung.
