ANNOUNCEMENT March 27, 2002
This Public
Announcement is being issued to alert U.S. citizens because of a
possible threat to U.S. citizens in the cities of Venice, Florence,
Milan and Verona on Easter Sunday from extremist groups. This Public
Announcement expires on April 25, 2002.
As stated in the
Department of State's Worldwide Caution dated March 17, 2002, the
U.S. Government continues to receive credible reports that extremists
are planning additional terrorist actions against U.S. interests. The
U.S. Government has learned that a possible threat exists to U.S.
citizens in the cities of Venice, Florence, Milan and Verona on
Easter Sunday, March 31, 2002, from extremist groups.
This warning does not include Rome as a site of possible
terrorist activity, but it is always possible that Rome will be
included in future State Department bulletins. Therefore, we ask you
to forward this e-mail to your families and to discuss with them your
proposed trip to Italy. Should Art Studio & Creative Writing
Workshop in Rome summer program be cancelled by Cornell, each student
will receive full refunds. (As some of you
know, the Cornell Hebrew course in Israel was cancelled shortly after
Nine Eleven.)
After Nine Eleven, the security at Palazzo Lazzaroni, the
Cornell Rome facility, was updated. Security cameras were installed,
giving a view of the street outside and a view of the entry doors
inside. Also, on the advice of security specialists, wooden and glass
doors were replaced with steel doors.
At the departure meeting (annoucement to come) or via e-mail
(for those of you not presently on the Cornell Ithaca campus), we
will be making recommendations to you, based on State Department
recommendations and our own experience traveling and living in Italy,
about sensible precautions to take in order to drawing attention to
yourself as an American abroad.
