One of our students has now claimed that they were kidnapped and held captive by their boyfriend and this is why they have not been attending class.

!!!

This was the information provided after an email sent to them, informing them that they had been absent for about ten days and were in danger of repeating the course.

Question: Did their boyfriend allow them to come to the keyboard just to respond to this query?

I weep for humanity.

I also wonder if this job is making me unduly cynical. But seriously. Kidnapped???

"I didn't think he would do this ive been with him for two years and i was only able to escape after doing certain things in order to get away."

Sounds like there's actually a possibility of an abusive situation or that she's trying to shock your sensibilities by implying she had to blow him a lot to let her come to class ;)

Seriously, insist on a police report, as it is not your job to divine the truth here.

Also, since your department hates you on alternate Tuesdays, I suggest you bring this one to them before something blows up on you.

I really did think it was on par with the whole -"was abducted by aliens, couldn't come to class-ness" of it all but it's all now escalated insanely.
