Hi guys! Any of y'all like RPS? 'Cause if you do, go ahead and check out this gem. It's RTD/GDL and it is awesome. *grin* C'mon. I saved you all a seat next to the fires of the seventh circle. It's toasty and warm, and I brought marshmallows.
I know! Why isn't more RPS like this? Clever, yet non-pretentious, and I *loved* the actor into character bleed. Like, isn't that why we all read all this anyway?
I feel dirty for even clicking on the link...so dirty that I'm commenting here to tell you, and I won't be back to tell you how many times I had to shower after reading it in order to feel clean again.
Hehehe. I vaguely think of assembling a rec list of good TW/DW RPS that doesn't make me want to claw out my own eyes. Trouble is, list would be so short! But this would definitely make it. My favorite kind of RPS is when the story comes round to affect the story on the screen. It makes me go all tingly.
I can think of two or three others. copperbadges, the really awesome John/Scott/David Tennant one, and I vaguely remember a John/Gareth one or two that were decently written. But I dont have links to most of them anymore.
Yeah, Sam's story is one of my absolute favorites; I've read another John/David Tennant series that I don't absolutely hate (but it's by an author who I can't stand so I feel weird about fanning their work; it troubles me when I dislike published authors, and yet appreciate their work; somehow it's worse when they're fan-authors, and you know, in the same community.) I've yet to read a John/Gareth one worthy of a second read, but I keep hoping. Oh, and I think I read a fairly decent John/Naoko one (sorta, it didn't really go anywhere) taking place at a Torchwood wrap party. That's pretty much the sum total of memorable stuff, as far as I can remember.
I'm scared to ask why you don't like that author! I understand that, and it definitely would be stronger with a peer, since its easier to feel like you can judge them as an equal. I very rarely pay attention to writers, professional or otherwise.
The John/Gareth ones I've read were reasonably titillating, but that's about it. Not particularly strong on the character front.
It's nothing scary per se; just I really, really don't like character bashing, and this author's loathing for Ianto is hard for me to stomach. And when it's a canon ship, I figure even if you don't like it, you need to try to respect it at least. Or at least acknowledge that you're writing total AU and go from there - not try to work it around so the text is made to say what you want it to say. I feel the same about Gwen bashers too, fwiw, and I don't ship Jack/Gwen.
*grins* Yeah, there should be better John/Gareth; I think GDL is studying at the feet of Barrowman, and majoring in fan-service, and if they're gonna lay it out there, someone should be picking it up ;-)
I got into fanfic via RSP (what they now call bandom, incidentally, some ... close to 10 years ago now) so yeah - hard to deny the attraction even now, even if the TW/DW circles produce little quality RPS as you noted above. I'm fond of the David Tennant/Derren Brown ones that versaphile wrote (which is admittedly, more crossover RPS than anything :P), but just because it hits my kink, I suppose.
Hmm! versaphile is pretty great. She's writing a Doctor/Master that I'm following, I think. I'll have to check out her Tennant story.
I guess I started out in Bandom too, sort of. But that was pre-internet for me; and it was Mary-Sue self insertion of the worst kind. Excusable, I suppose hope when uninflicted on the general public! My best friend (magnetgirl) and I used to exchange 'em. We didn't even know it was called fanfic back then.
I have to say, I think being a fan was harder in those days of yore. You actually had to dig for info when it wasn't just all available digitally.
She also has some DT/JB?... or was that DT/John Simm which I know she has - ... Praxis, yeah, I'm following that one also quite intently.
I didn't really write it back then, mostly read it. First slash story was Silverchair/Placebo crossover which was just hot because Brian Molko is quite the twink (and not). Ah I do think Mary Sues are excusable in general when they fulfill needs of people. No-one has to read it and enjoy it. *shrugs*
Pre-internet- yeah I can imagine. Still think it's funny I came to regular fandoms by starting out with RPS, then slipping into original gay fiction and gay porn and slipping back into fandom.
Slash! *laughs* God, I don't even *know* what my first slash pairing was. When I discovered fanfic, it was a mutual friend giving me a heads up about rm's hp fic. And then another friend telling me about Buffy fandom. It was all het for me at first. I can't even remember what my first slash story was, although I suspect it was either a Harry/Draco or a Angel/Spike. God, and then it was Queer as Folk (...and in the beginning, there was RTD...)
I don't, actually, consider myself a "slasher" per se. I'm usually pretty omnivorous with regard to pairings, and I'll do any flavor of slash/femmeslash, het, and/or poly -- although in any fandom there's usually a select few that I'll be into, and then others that I'll read if the story seems good, and still more than I just find improbable and worse, uninteresting, and then there's usually one that I just cannot stand. Often this is a canon pairing, which is usually really obnoxious.
I have been reading all this RPS by versaphile now! Thanks for the tip. =)
*pulls up a comfy chair in your corner of the Special Hell*
I almost stopped reading it near the beginning. Almost. But yeah, it was totally worth overcoming my usual weirdness around RPS. Brilliant, actually, and not requiring the brain bleach, although I had it at the ready.
Yeah! I love how it's not actual sexing! It makes it more plausible, and also, awesome. *grin* If all RPS was like this, well... I guess I'd have fallen even farther to the Dark Side than I already have.

Wasn't it kind of evil genius though?
