So I finally had the opportunity to sit down and read this.

I've said this before, and I'm sure I'll say it again, but one of the things I like best about this series is the realism. This isn't a fairy tale, with Jack remembering Ianto forever, and there is true love. Instead, there is love, but also the reality of time and distance. I love Ianto's reactions in this: to the Doctor (love how you highlight his own difficult experience with the Doctor, versus Jack's love and support for him), to the Face of Boe and lastly, to Jack on his return. It is a terrific gift that the Doctor gives to the Face of Boe and to Ianto, by having Ianto present to Jack the item. It both shows how time has moved on, but also gives the Face of Boe the chance to re-learn bits of his own past.

Ianto's return is beautifully handled. I also liked Jack's reaction in this - his certainty that something must be about to explode, b/c why else would the Doctor be here and taking Ianto? And the fear of betrayal, which makes perfect sense given their history.

Wonderful chapter in this series.
