Children of Earth - Day One
Jul. 6th, 2009 09:17 pmI LOVED IT. Even the evil, and soon thereafter dead S. Asian guy didn't bug me. (Score: S. Asians [i.e. Suzie, Suzie's dad, P.R. girl in "Planet of the Ood", Torchwood Scientist in "Army of Ghosts"] - 0; Whoniverse - ELEVENTY BILLION.) Well, okay, it bugged me. But not enough to tarnish the spectacularness of Gwen! Being sensible! And cool! AND GOOD AT HER JOB. And the little Torchwood-let on the way. AWWWW. And Jack! And Ianto! TRIPLE AWW! And Rhys! Quadruple awwww! And TEAM. And creepy children. Evil government! CONTINUITY! The point about aliens and the lack of faith thing. It is so nice to see a reaction to the events of before. Owen/Tosh picture-touching! There aren't enough exclamation points in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I loved Ianto's coming out scene. So beautifully done, for serious. I love the magical land that Rusty is so fond of -- yeah, it's an estate, yeah it's not posh, yeah they jack your car. But! non-upper classness/poverty != homophobic, racist fuckery. (c.f. Rose + Mickey).
(Except, Ianto, have we learned nothing from cannibals? SERIOUSLY. And when, evil, soon-to-be dead S. Asian guy says, "hey are you torchwood?" and Jack & Ianto are all like, "Never heard of 'em." BUT IT'S WRITTEN ON THE VAN, GUYS. Still, these are but the sand in a pearl making oyster.)
It was brilliant, and I cried at the Hub exploding. And I didn't hate Jack's daughter; it wasn't melodramatic at all, but just natural and right. Much like the whole Gwen's baby thing felt to me.
Now, in the next few, I'd like to see Ianto earn his keep a little more, but other than that, OMG, Rusty, thank you. Torchwood has really missed you. And I've really missed Torchwood.
Bliss!
ETA: And as I said in a comment below, how much do I love Jack being all con-man and trying to kidnap his own grandson, and then Ianto, the Little Jack That Could doing the same thing with his niece! SO MUCH.

Date: 2009-07-07 01:39 am (UTC)Oh and I love the fic you and rm write if anyway possible try to work it into canon or at least not directly contradict it b/c what I love most about your work is how unbelievable plausible and utterly realistic it is.

Date: 2009-07-07 02:02 am (UTC)yeah, it is pretty insane. And with the asian characters, I think it might actually be zero that aren't either evil or dead or both.
Will try to do the canon thing with EtGB. I wish we'd been able to finish it prior to S3, but alas. Stupid cancer.

Date: 2009-07-07 02:09 am (UTC)Yes. This. The spoilers didn't do it justice, and thinking too much with your fic-brain can spoil it, because all of that's actually done really well.
How much do I love that the next ep is TOMORROW? There goes this week...

On the one hand, yes. On the other: HOW WILL I WAIT 24 HOURS? (I didn't watch S1 & 2 as they aired, but all at once, in like a week.)

Date: 2009-07-07 02:26 pm (UTC)I am dead certain that their whole "never heard of it" when they're getting into the ZOMGTORCHWOOD Range Rover is intentional. It's fucking-with-someone of the highest order, trying to draw him in, etc.

Date: 2009-07-07 03:33 pm (UTC)Have you heard the Golden Age radio play yet? All ~Eternal British Empire~ in the middle of India, it's a bit bollocks.
Oh, and regarding your next post, I'm glad I wasn't the only person frantic for the pterodactyl the moment I realized they'd put a bomb in Jack.

Date: 2009-07-07 05:54 pm (UTC)And Dr. Patanjali was HOT. *sniff*
Seriously, it really bugs me, the whole S. Asian thing. I mean. they are the most prevalent minority in Britain, no? Like, wtf.
I did however love Ianto's whole, actually Mandarin most dominant language thing, though I found it hard to believe that Jack would think otherwise.
And yes, Myfanwy! I need a shot of her flying over the bay NOW pls, kthnx.

Date: 2009-07-07 09:13 pm (UTC)Yeah. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
I think Jack and Ianto were talking about two different things: the latter simply about numbers, the former about what dominates the international, erm, conversation, as it were. (Geez, have I worked for UNESCO too long or what?)

Date: 2009-07-07 11:07 pm (UTC)I know what you mean, but I think it's kind of a symptom of how they are sometimes confused with how they write Jack? Like, is he the time traveler who knows how things shake out and is above our petty politics, and like the Doctor has a much larger view? Or is he his persona of soldier boy and American to boot?
