Have not accomplished nearly as much work as I thought I was going to this weekend. Although I did sleep a lot, which is of the good. And there's always tomorrow. Must come up with some sort of concept for my Romantics class, am at a loss. I like the period, but have no idea what to write about. Something Byron-esque perhaps? Austen? I really have no idea.

Had a delightful dinner with Kat yesterday. Lots of gabbing and curling and wine and suchlike. Really have to try to do that more often. Leaving house = double plus good. Also, Hallowe'en looms ever nearer and as always I am woefully unprepared. How does this always happen?

Saw the Edie as well today, which was nice. It's been ages since I actually had two social engagements in one weekend. AND I actually got her to concede a couple of points about Star Wars. *victory dance* It felt like real autumn finally: brisk breeze, fall coats, black coffee, park benches, blueberry dougnuts and coffee cake muffins (which sound like they should be unholy combinations but were actually really good.) Also realised that there is a swan back in our little lagoon, although this one doesn't seem to have a mate. Which may be for the best, really. There used to be a pair of swans that would come out there every spring and nest, and in due course of time, hatch their cygnets. Which inspired my very fervent readings of Trumpeter of the Swan as a small child, and also my habit of building nests on my parents bed, and moving the various twigs and leaves (pillows and blankets) into place with my beak (mouth). Okay, so the last time I did that was a short month ago. But I digress. ANYway the swans came every year till I was about 16 or 17. That year, they laid their eggs as usual and all seemed well. Till one day somebody came and systematically smashed each one in the nest, leaving shell fragments and bits of yolk scattered nearby. That pair of swans never came back. I suppose I could forgive it, if someone homeless person had taken them to eat, or even if someone had stolen them for some nefarious swan-rearing purpose. But smashing them for kicks really seemed beyond the pale. I don't think I cried. But I've never forgotten it.

I'm thinking of popping out to see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow by myself this week, if I have a free moment. I can't believe I haven't seen it yet. No one else seems to blend with my movie schedule of late. It's actually surprisingly cool seeing movies all in my own little world. And this way, I get to see movies that I would never drag anybody else to, like Wimbledon, which was cute, but mainly starred Paul Bettany who was charmingly worth the price of admission, and I could squee to myself in peace without worrying what my neighbors thought of me. Also I am distinctly disturbed by the fact that the previews for Alfie, make it look, well, pretty good. It's irritating, because I'm terribly sick of Hollywood remaking classic movies shoddily with simplistic updates for the sake of modernity that never quite work (i.e. The Out of Towners, The Goodbye Girl, The Truth about Charlie/Charade, The In Laws, Psycho; to name but a few of the most egregious examples). But, this one really seems to want me to see it. Alas.

Cruelty to birds seems to be the disturbing nostalgia theme of the week.
I confess to Alfie-related wibblings, but I blame it on the Law. You know I'm with you on pointless remakes in general.
Paul Bettany almost made me want to see Wimbledon, and you know how I feel about both tennis and romantic movies. He was the best thing in Master and Commander (except the iguanas).
And yes, see Sky Captain!!! It will put a big grin on your face.

re: Alfie, I mean, teh Law and the Mighty Susan. Sigh. They are this cruel on purpose.
