baseball and apple pie
Oct. 21st, 2004 01:25 amI have a long history of cheering on the Yankees, but this year I've gotta admit, I was happy for the Red Sox to take it. They deserved it, they played hard, they fought back, they didn't accept history or defeat, and they were fun. Which is more than I can say for the Bronx Bombers.
I find professional sports hard to take under the best of circumstances, but I must admit to the following of baseball on occasion, probably some bizarre hangover from high school when my well beloved thugs got me excited about it. Also hitting a baseball was the second (and last) athletic thing that I learned to do very well, and the allure of it still hangs. (The first being riding a horse).
Anyway, while I am probably more a Yankees fan than any other, this year I've gotten even more distressed than usual about their ridiculous politics - the seventh inning "god bless america", Steinbrenner, and all the other nonsense. Now I'm not of the mind that a richer team deserves to lose or anything like that: it's all theatre, they're all overpaid shmucks, and they'd all buy the best team possible if they could. But the overt conservatism this year was just too much to take, and the boos tha Carlos Delgado got for his quietly dignified anti-war protest: I just kept thinking, this is New York City! Whatever has happened here??
I just wonder what all the souvenir shop-owners are going to do with the "Boston, Who's your Daddy?" shirts that I saw plastered all over 34rth St this week. I think they're going to have a surplus.
And if they win the series, which I'm rooting for, I just hope it can be taken as an omen for our presidential election. Especially if it's Houston they grind into the dirt.

Any chance of dragging you New York-ward anytime soon?
