I've been pondering this whole British tourists incident. Apparently the five guys were Sikhs! Which, I think explains perfectly why Bloomberg is just apologizing for the detention of British Tourists, instead of being placed in the embarrassing position of having to explain to the Brits why five innocent guys wearing fanny packs and experiencing the Big Apple were shot in the head.

Let me backtrack. Remember the Brazilian dude who was shot in the head five times a few days ago? (Although the British police might want us to forget). Due to my political naivete, I was wondering why exactly they would want to Amadou Diallo this guy in the middle of a crowded Tube car. It seemed really ridiculous, considering they were allegedly worried about the guy having bombs taped to his body. Wouldn't shooting into his body be a little counter productive in the whole averting explosions department? But now it all comes clear! They had to shoot him in the head because that's the part they knew was bomb-free (considering his suspicious outerwear of course!). At least, their whole shoot first ask questions later oh wait we can't 'cause he's dead thing would probably not have killed that Tube car full of people (and it must give the Brits a certain sense of relief that their cops can actually hit what they're aiming at, if it'd been the NYPD, I bet not all five would've made it in).

But that's what must have saved these Sikhs! They were wearing turbans! Who knows what stuff could have been secreted by their heads as they kneeled on the sidewalk for an hour, for the crime of deciding to take a stupid tourbus and (shock! horror!) buy their tickets in advance!

It occurs to me to wonder what the authorities are going to do when winter comes 'round and everyone's all muffled up.

Here's a post from Bruce Schneier (a pretty famous security guy) on the British shoot to kill policy that you might find interesting: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2005/07/shoot-to-kill.html (http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2005/07/shoot-to-kill.html)

...very interesting blog...

kali, i'm glad you post this sort of thing, because othr than npr i abhor watching/reading the news, and.. well, public radio hasn't covered too much since the original bombings.

thanks for keeping me informed, and having the same feelings of outrage that i usually have no one to share with :)

Yes, I seem to be the bearer of Bad News for a lot of people.
I'd say my pleasure, but the phrase doesn't seem to apply.
And it is always nice to know that we're not alone in outrage.

*hugs*
