some personal equations + some info. on writer's strike

So, am back from SD. Actual 72 hrs in Palm Tree Land = very nice. Dominos, food, episodes of Forever Knight, lots of sleep albeit on a somewhat hard floor, general relaxation and an extremely comfortable couch.

24 hrs of travel on American Airlines with layovers, lack of sleep and generally busted-ass airplanes with terrible service and extreme discomfort = less nice.

Cold/Flu thing that I have picked up = very bad.

Last night, something weird happened to my vision. Everything became blurry/shimmery in spots - sort of like bits of my field of vision were devolving into rainbow, oasis hallucinations. Has this ever happened to anyone? I thought that I was going blind for a while - which is of great personal fear to me. I may have had a fever at the time, as I began to catalogue my options if I was indeed going blind, and oddly, the Final Solution seemed the most sensible and attractive.*

I was very frightened.

I'm better now, though still feeling a bit weird. Have made a doctor's appt. for tomorrow.

In other news, support the writer's strike by calling the networks and urging them to comply with writers' demands in talks today.

Yes, this has happened to me many many times because of my heart condition. Your blood probably isn't oxygenating well and you were essentially fainting, very slowly. This can also be a migraine thing.

The rainbow sparkles in your field of vision that you describe sound like part of a migraine aura. How long did they last?

I am not a doctor, but I've had these before and my doctor called them "optical migraines".

Heh. Someone below said the same thing re: migraine. I had a headache but not a really bad one.

This happens to you all the time? That sucks majorly. I thought my vision was just going to...go. And then I thought, no more reading! I will die!

I still feel very strange. I will tell my doctor tomorrow and see what she says!

It used to happen to me constantly when the heart thing was much worse, now only a couple of times a year, but yeah.

Also, migraines do not have to involve pain. Graene, I think gets ones like these without pain if I recall correctly.

Thank you for the info! I did have a headache, but it wasn't unmanageable, so I didn't think migraine. It was very weird. I will describe it to my doctor and ask about the optical version.

It lasted about 2 or 3 hours, I think, but my time sense wasn't too good.

Going blind is a major fear of all humanities academics. Your fever thoughts aren't strange at all -- but I'm very glad to hear that you are no longer feeling that way ;) . When my lifestyle starts to really murder my sight and my eyes protest, I make a hot towel (microwave a damp hand towel for 30-6 seconds) and lay it folded over my eyes -- repeat as necessary. I also exact a reading/viewing ban on myself -- no tv, computers, books, anything. I try to focus in the distance as often as possible.

My vision continues to deteriorate :( .
