Thanks! I've been meaning to read Shades of Ianto when I have a spare moment, though haven't got round to it yet. About the first... well. They are certainly two variant interpretations of the genre 'romance.'

Different genres of romance is right. Like, good romance, and bad romance. :P

(Goes and checks your flist before posting this comment...)

I never got into SoI. I read the first arc or whatever it was, and it is good, but SCK's writing style was too wordy for me, and I didn't like her characterization of Jack or Ianto, so I gave up. Not my kind of fic.

*grins* Thanks for checking, but unnecessary. Not, ahem, my cup of tea. Lifty was a runner-up to that one as well! In the "dark" category? I remain puzzled.

Congrats on your awards, btw! Well deserved ;-)

I was more worried she had you friended and might read this than the reverse, but either way, good to know. ;)

Ah, thanks. I, erm, take those things with a bit of skepticism and awareness of exposure vs. quality, but hey, if it brings new readers in!

Dark? Having not read it (couldn't get through the first paragraph of a couple chapters I tried) I'm not sure, but I keep hearing about a psychic link and I get the impression there's a lot of h/c going on in it. I keep wanting to read it the same way I want to read Twilight - so I can disparage against its popularity with knowledge.

I read some of it. But dark, it did not seem. Then again, I may have a differing definition than most.

I would certainly have put yours (as in both of you) first in the first one, and my complaint about the second one is, I don't care how good everyone thinks SoI is, it was written how long ago???

I think any awards thingy should be for 'current' work unless the awards are specify for 'best of all time' works.

Thanks! That's very kind.

To be honest, while it's always a pleasure to be nominated, and voted for, I am bemused by the whole awards thing, regardless. It brings to mind school elections in a weird sort of way. The categories often seem to meld together fics that are trying to do very different things. And it's pretty hard to arbitrate quality via majority vote.

I just stumbled across the latest part of 'I Had No Idea I Had Been Traveling' last night and ended up staying up till 4 in the morning reading it all the way through, because you and RM have me thoroughly hooked.

I'd have settled for being nominated, but since my output's been rather megre, twas not to be. Congratulation on the Runner-Up awards, though. If it makes you feel better, I voted for you as Winner in the second category, since I've never read SoI (I've already got a dozen multi-chapter stories I'm following, and I've sworn I'm not going to take on any more till at least one-possibly two-of them are finished).

*grins* Thank you so much! We're delighted to have 'hooked' you.

re: awards, it's always a lovely thrill to be recognized, naturally. But as I say upthread, I find the whole fandom awards thing to be a bit odd. Loads of really awesome fic gets missed; categories end up comparing stories that are doing very different things and measuring them against each other, which is not really fair to either, and I find the idea of giving quality awards based on majority vote to be puzzling (though I suppose there's no real good alternative...)

But thank you so much for voting and even more for reading. That's what it's about, for us, in the end really.

If it makes you feel any better... IHNIIBT will be done pretty soon! Only one more chunk to go... That'll clear up a new slot for you ;-)

Yes, but I don't WANT it to be done! It's fascinating and unlike anything I've ever read in Torchwood fandom, and I've grown quit fond of it, like I have 'The Oncoming Storm' and Teach's 'Un' series (though we're between stories right now there).

I envy people who can write long, multi-chaptered stories, because I'm lucky if I can come up with anything more than 2-3 pages long. I don't have the patience to write them myself, but I do so love reading them.

There is a disturbingly high amount of hideous fics in that whole award list, and on top of they've won a good deal of categories, too.
I (and I dare say I'm not the only one) clearly overestimated most of the readers' ability to judge.

Bewildering indeed.

There ought to be an alternative by the TWU or Torchwood House, but we already know what we like and that everything affiliated is good, so it'd be a bit redundant.
And everyone involved would be called elitist, again, although at this point, I consider it to be a compliment rater than an accusation.

Yeah, I don't think awards make a heck of a lot of sense. If you do them by vote, it's just exposure and popularity, and if you do them by panel, it's elitist. I think competitions where fics are anonymous - something like [livejournal.com profile] writerinadrawer, which I did last round, or HD worldcup - are the best form of real competition in fandom. Far less room for either BNFs who clean up or badfic that decreased their usefulness.

No worries. Hey, I was thinking it too! There are plenty of fics deserving of accolades, and plenty of fics that are not, which get them.

But yeah, there's the fics that have immense exposure and popularity, and if it's by a panel, it's too specific to taste, with a very small group deciding.

The only thing I might think of that would work would be one where there was a way to narrow down voters sufficiently such that it wasn't just who appeals to the lowest common denominator, but at the same time, polled enough people that you'd get fandom-wide representation. But I don't know at all how you'd do it.

Anyway, I find it all rather puzzling. But hey, more readers = good. And meeting cool people = good. And having people to flail and squee and analyse to death with. And good dialogue. Everything else is just gravy. And weird bits.

Yeah, the anon things are cool. And better then the fest ones where your situation in the fest (were you posted first when people were still enthusiastic, or when people were overwhelmed and bored, did you have a good prompt, etc etc...) can have a lot to do with what fics get recognized. I think gift things are cool, but I think many folk are always secretly hoping that this is the story which will MAKE THEM and it so rarely ever is.

Okay, also "make them" -- this is one of those other digressions -- fanning the fans and how fanfiction can get you book deals and all the other craziness that goes on, and it's like I can't talk about it, because I'm not immune, and, it's just complicated, and it actually, probably should be, but oi.

Yep! Off the top of my head, I just rec'd a pretty great one at TW House. It's by [livejournal.com profile] lightgetsin and called "Think of Something (http://lightgetsin.livejournal.com/248474.html)".
Then there's First Night (http://becky-writing.livejournal.com/25812.html) by [livejournal.com profile] becky_writing
[livejournal.com profile] wendymr is pretty good too. Here's a link to her Ninth Doctor era fanfic (http://wendymr.livejournal.com/125128.html). Scroll down for Jack/Nine; it's preceded by Nine/Rose and then Jack/Nine/Rose. If I think of anything else, I'll get back to you!
